Soda-fired vases – dark beauties born of fire
These vases are thrown and later given carved ridges – a tactile surface that catches both light and glaze. Inside, they have an orange shino glaze that lifts the dark clay body and creates a warm, contrasting tone.
Before the firing I was uncertain – would the clay survive the high temperature in the soda kiln? But to my great relief (and delight), they came through the firing beautifully. What emerged were dark beauties with glossy-to-matte surfaces, full of life and presence.
The firing took place in a wood-fired kiln, where soda was sprayed into the hot chamber. The soda reacts with the heat to form a natural glaze that varies depending on how the vapours sweep across the surface.
Each vase is a unique result of form, fire, and the moment the soda met the clay and the heat.
